In a recent article posted on the BBC website entitled: Tens of thousands at US immigration reform rallieswas reported that thousands of people came together across the US in a mass call for citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

The protesters, among them union leaders, domestic workers, farm laborers and immigration activists, called upon the Congress to act an immigration reform bill.

Yesterday such mass-meetings were held in Washington DC, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta and other places. In order to win immigration reform the demonstrators intend to walk the streets all over the country.

In the US Senate, a bipartisan group of senators proposed for consideration a bill which would require strict border security measures to be in place before undocumented immigrants could gain legal status. Those in favor of tighter controls are concerned about the nearly 20 million Americans who are not able to find a full time job and the nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants, most of whom are Hispanic.

It would also give an opportunity to many legal immigrants to come to the US as guest workers.

Other political groups support more rigorous immigration laws and state that the reforms under consideration would aggravate financial problems for state and local governments and would lead to higher levels of illegal immigration.

In spite of the failed attempts to reform the immigration system in 2007 and 2010, a new bill is expected soon. Moreover, President Barack Obama has expressed optimism that an immigration bill could be passed in the first half of 2013.
